Scott & White Hospital – Round Rock has earned the Gold Seal of Approval™ from The Joint Commission (JCAHO) for Primary Stroke Centers. Scott & White – Round Rock earned this distinction after The Joint Commission conducted an on-site review this month and it’s the only JCAHO Certified Stroke Center serving Williamson County. In addition, Scott & White – Round Rock also was awarded the American Stroke Association’s “Get With The Guidelines” Bronze Performance Achievement Award for its commitment and success in providing a higher standard of stroke care according to national standards.
“Scott & White – Round Rock demonstrated that its stroke care program follows national standards and guidelines that can significantly improve outcomes for stroke patients,” says Jean E. Range, M.S., R.N., C.P.H.Q., Executive Director, Disease-Specific Care Certification, The Joint Commission.
Every year about 700,000 people experience a new or recurrent stroke, which is the nation’s third leading cause of death. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 45 seconds and someone dies of a stroke every three minutes. Stroke is a leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the U.S., with about 4.7 million stroke survivors alive today.
“We’re very proud to achieve this distinction,” says Ernie Bovio, Chief Executive Officer at Scott & White – Round Rock. “The Joint Commission Primary Stroke Center Certification recognizes our commitment to providing outstanding care to our patients and community.”
The Joint Commission’s Primary Stroke Center Certification is based on the recommendations for primary stroke centers published by the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association’s statements/guidelines for stroke care. A list of programs certified by The Joint Commission is available at www.jointcommission.org.
“The time is right for Scott & White to be continually focused on improving the quality of stroke care as the number of acute ischemic stroke patients eligible for treatment is expected to grow over the next decade due to increasing stroke cases and a large aging population,” says Leigh Allen, RN, stroke program coordinator at Scott & White – Round Rock who was also the driving force and a visionary behind the development of the stroke program.
