Digital mammography and enhanced bone density scanning services offered
Scott & White Healthcare has announced the opening of a new Women’s Center at its Taylor hospital located at 305 Mallard Lane. Women in the Taylor and surrounding communities can take advantage of these additional services, including digital mammography and bone density scanning. With the new Women’s Center now located at Scott & White Hospital – Taylor patients no longer have to drive to Austin or Round Rock for clinical screening services. A ribbon cutting ceremony will take place on Tuesday, October 11 at 5:00pm in the Scott & White Hospital – Taylor lobby to commemorate the opening.
“Digital mammography has never been offered here before, so introducing this service allows us to continue delivering the highest quality care in the prevention and early detection of breast cancer to Taylor and our surrounding communities,” said Kevin Smith, chief operations officer at Scott & White Hospital – Taylor. “It further demonstrates our mission to provide the right care, in the right place, at the right time.”
Digital mammography is the same as traditional film mammography, but faster. A radiologist can process and retrieve images faster, and they’re more detailed. “Because digital mammography is ‘filmless,’ nothing has to be developed,” said Michael Do, MD, a radiologist at Scott & White Hospital – Round Rock. “Images are analyzed on a monitor and stored electronically.” Mammograms at the new Women’s Center will be read by board certified radiologists specializing in breast imaging.
At the new Women’s Center, Scott & White Hospital – Taylor utilizes tele-radiology where a patient’s imaging in Taylor can be viewed immediately by the Scott & White – Round Rock radiology team who determines if follow-up diagnosis or treatment is needed.
Bone density scanning, also called dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) or bone densitometry, is an enhanced form of x-ray technology that is used to measure bone loss. DXA is today’s established standard for measuring bone mineral density. Bone density is used to diagnose osteoporosis, a common factor in hip and spine fractures.
“If a patient requires follow-up care, Scott & White Hospital – Round Rock is only 30 minutes away,” said Smith, who is also a trained radiology technician.
“Scott & White is continuing its commitment to Williamson County to provide the most comprehensive and highest quality health care available,” said Ernie Bovio, CEO of Scott & White Healthcare – Round Rock.
