A formal ground breaking ceremony today marked the official start of construction for a new Scott & White Healthcare walk-in minor emergency clinic in Killeen. The new clinic is expected to open in the summer 2012.
Construction activity is already visible at the site, located on the U.S. Highway 190 eastbound access road at the Killeen city limits line. The walk-in clinic is unique in the Scott & White system, and will be designed to provide convenient access for routine care as well as care for minor emergencies. Patients will be able to access the facility without an appointment 12 hours a day, seven days a week.

“This is a dynamic, growing and very active community,” said Glen Couchman, MD, chief medical officer for the Scott & White Healthcare system. “Access to non-emergent but immediate medical care when a person needs it – many times on short notice – is very important to the quality of life for residents of a community. The Killeen area already has great health care available. With the addition of this new type of clinic, we meet a need which is currently unfilled. Everyone in the area benefits.”
When open, the 13,000-square-foot facility will be staffed by three family medicine physicians, office and support staff, and house on-site laboratory and diagnostic imaging.
Another unique feature of this Scott & White clinic is the facility will provide important preventive health value for the community by containing and offering an innovative wellness community room. Perfect as a location to host informational meetings and classes to help patients better manage their health conditions which may include chronic illness, the instructional room will feature a test kitchen for demonstrating and teaching techniques for cooking healthy meals and medically-prescribed diets.
“Along with being an immediate resource for people needing non-emergency medical care when they can’t wait for a regular doctor’s office appointment, this clinic will help families save money,” said Mike Reis, MD, associate regional chief medical officer for Scott & White Healthcare, and chairman of the Family Medicine department. “In most cases this clinic will give individuals and families a less costly alternative to an emergency room visit. This clinic will offer shorter wait times and lower the out-of-pocket costs associated with traditional ER visits.”
The new clinic is not intended for serious or life-threatening injuries or illnesses. If it is determined when a patient is evaluated at the clinic that they require emergency medical treatment, they will be transferred to an emergency medicine facility.
