CENTRAL TEXAS – Scott & White Healthcare starts construction of a new cancer center for Waco with a groundbreaking ceremony on the Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center campus. Named the Scott & White Cancer Center – Hillcrest, the $19.5 million center will bring the latest research and advanced cancer treatment to the Waco area.

“This center will be the quality resource the Waco area deserves for cancer care and treatment. The advanced capabilities and enhanced services of the center will be something that the citizens of Waco can be very proud of, and will benefit patients and their families in many different ways,” said Dr. W. Roy Smythe, senior vice president for Institute Development. “We will provide access to high level diagnosis and care at home, and also access to absolutely any modern treatment available for cancer, including clinical trials, via the system-wide Scott & White Cancer Institute.”

The state-of-the-art facility will allow patients to receive outpatient cancer treatments including radiation therapy, medical oncology and infusion chemotherapy in a convenient, easily accessible location.

“Patients requiring specialized care will no longer need to travel out-of-town for their treatment during a time when rest and comfort is so needed,” said Glenn A. Robinson, CEO of Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center. “It is essential that we provide our cancer patients with care that is second to none.”

The cancer center project is located on the front lawn of the landmark Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center, near the frontage road at the corner of south I-35 and State Highway 6/Loop 340. Full construction activity will begin in the next 4-6 weeks, and is expected to take 12-18 months to complete.

The new building is designed to create a tranquil environment, to meet the patient’s physical and psychological needs while delivering technologically advanced clinical cancer services. The Scott & White Cancer Center – Hillcrest will have approximately 34,400 square feet of space, including:

  • Linear accelerator and treatment areas for radiation therapy
  • CT simulator
  • New technologies such as Image-guided radiation therapy and Intensity-modulated radiation therapy
  • 20 infusion therapy rooms with scenic garden views
  • Patient exam, consult and procedure rooms
  • Space for cancer care education and support programs

The heritage of leadership in cancer care at Scott & White began in 1933 when the American College of Surgeons approved Scott & White Memorial Hospital as the first cancer treatment center in Texas.

“This new cancer center is one more opportunity to work with Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center and expand health care assets and services in Waco,” said Dr. Robert W. Pryor, president and CEO of Scott & White Healthcare. “We remain dedicated to delivering on the promise made to the leadership of Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center and all the Waco residents. Through Hillcrest, Scott & White looks forward to a dynamic future where we are expanding programs to serve the Waco community.”

Hillcrest’s commitment to cancer care began 33 years ago with the opening of the Fentress Cancer Center on the original Hillcrest campus. Over the last year, more than 700 unique cancer patients received treatment at Hillcrest. Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center is distinguished as a Comprehensive Community Cancer Center by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.
