McLane Children’s Hospital Prescribes Family, Food and Fun

Family wellness is the focus of two free special events

McLane Children’s Scott & White Hospital is teaming up with community sponsors this fall to offer two free family-oriented wellness events. The goal is to help bring families closer together through shared activities that focus on family, food and fun.

“We were looking for ways to encourage families to spend more time together,” says Blair Murphy, MPA, community wellness and education consultant for McLane Children’s. ” Research shows that families who spend time together tend to be healthier. We came up with two different educational events that encourage healthy food shopping, preparation, and eating as a family activity promoting togetherness in a fun atmosphere.”

Both events are free and open to the public, but registration is required. In addition to McLane Children’s, community sponsors include H-E-B Plus!, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension and City of Killeen Parks and Recreation.

Healthy Shopping Tours

On Saturday, Sept. 26, families can sign up for one of four healthy shopping tours to learn how to find healthy options at the grocery store. Parents participating in the 30-minute shopping tours may find their children begin opting for healthy fruits and veggies instead of sugar-laden treats after taking part in this fun hands-on activity.

During the shopping trips, led by a registered dietitian, children will learn how to pick out fruits and vegetables that are tasty—and good for them! Participating families will get a chance to:

  • Discover fun ways to select, prepare and store healthy items.
  • Learn how to properly identify and select fruits and vegetables.
  • Discuss the health benefits of eating together as a family.
  • And ask a registered dietitian questions.

Parents must be accompanied by a child or children under 17 and registration is required to attend this family-friendly event. There are four 30-minute tours on Saturday, Sept. 26, at 11 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 1 p.m. Each tour is limited to 15 participating families.

The event is co-sponsored by McLane Children’s Scott & White Hospital; H-E-B Plus! grocery store, 2511 Trimmier Road, Killeen, TX 76542; and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension.
